18-year-old shot, killed in Rochester identified

An 18-year-old man was shot to death late Wednesday night in the Marketview Heights neighborhood in Rochester, according to police.

Emergency responders were called to Second Street and Central Park just after 11 p.m. after Divine Calloway of Rochester was shot multiple times, according to Rochester police. Investigators said Calloway was involved in a fight with another person in which he was shot in the torso and lower body, Umbrino said.

Officers located Calloway in the street. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and died shortly after he arrived, Umbrino said.

No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting. The killing marked Rochester's 33rd homicide of the year and fourth fatal shooting in the past week, according to RPD's Open Data Portal.

Police did not share any additional details about the incident.

Rochester City School District Superintendent Carmine Peluso said that Calloway was a recent graduate of Wilson Magnet High School.

"Once again an unfathomable act of violence has affected our entire community," Peluso said. "While we gather to support our students, Divine’s friends and teammates, I cannot help but wonder how much more of the future of this city will be lost to senseless, selfish, violence in our streets. I send my heartfelt condolences to Divine's family."

"He mattered and will not be forgotten," Peluso said.

Second Street and Central Park is a block northeast of the Rochester Public Market, which was not open at the time of the shooting.
