An 18-year-old man died after driving northbound on the southbound lanes of Loop 101 and colliding with another vehicle near Bell Road on Tuesday night, officials said.

The wrong-way driver was traveling in the right direction initially but then he made a U-turn on the freeway, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bart Graves. Troopers responded to the collision at about 11 p.m.

It was unclear why the driver made the U-turn. Additional details surrounding the crash and the drivers' identities were not released by DPS.

"Since he was alone in his vehicle, we may never know. However, the investigation is in its early stages and ongoing," Graves said.

The 18-year-old was taken to a hospital where he died. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as a 22-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
