18-Year-Old Kills 3, Hurts 2 Cops in ‘Chaotic’ New Mexico Shooting

A shooting in Farmington, New Mexico Monday morning left at least four dead—including the suspect—and nine others injured, police said.

The suspected shooter was an 18-year-old man, who was killed by police in what was described as a “chaotic scene.” It’s unclear what prompted the incident.

“This morning, we received multiple calls into our dispatch center that there were shots being fired,” Farmington Police Department Deputy Chief Baric Crum said at a news conference Monday. “Officers responded to the area to find a chaotic scene where a male subject was actively firing upon individuals in that neighborhood.”

The shooting reportedly happened outside of a church on a residential street in the city of about 50,000 residents. Crum said that four officers then confronted the suspect and were “able to stop his actions,” and confirmed that the suspect was dead.

Details of the shooting remains unclear, however.

“Three civilians were killed by this person’s actions,” Crum said, adding that a further two officers were among those injured in the gunfire. Both officers are in stable condition at a local hospital.

Crum said the ages of the victims are still unknown; names have also not yet been released. Additionally, he was unsure whether the alleged shooter entered any buildings during the incident, or if he had a prior criminal history.

“We are still trying to determine why he was in this neighborhood,” Crum said.

Crum said that an additional press conference will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday as investigators work to learn more. He urged anyone with information or evidence to call dispatch at 505-334-6622.
