19-year-old critically injured after being hit by semitruck in James City County

A pedestrian attempting to retrieve items from a road in Norge in James City County was struck by a semitruck early Sunday morning.

The pedestrian, a 19-year-old from Newport News, sustained life-threatening injuries, according to a release from James City County. First responders administered treatment, then the pedestrian was airlifted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.

Police responded to Richmond Road near Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital around 12:30 a.m. An initial investigation determined that the pedestrian was retrieving items from the roadway. The driver of a Freightliner semitruck, without a trailer attached, was traveling eastbound and attempted to maneuver to avoid the pedestrian in the roadway.

Charges are not anticipated against the truck driver, as indicated by the ongoing investigation in collaboration with the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office.
