19-year-old hiker vanishes in Glacier National Park, rangers say. Search is underway
UPDATE: A 19-year-old hiker reported missing in a Montana national park has been found, rangers said.
Two Bear Air Rescue found Matthew David Read after spotting a “thermal heat signature in heavily forested terrain” in Glacier National Park at around 11 p.m. on Monday, May 8, Glacier National Park said in a May 9 news release.
Read, who was “somewhat responsive,” was hoisted and flown out of the park, rangers said.
“He is in stable condition,” according to rangers.

A search is underway for a 19-year-old hiker reported missing out of a Montana national park, rangers said.
Matthew David Read was last heard from in the afternoon on Friday, May 5, Glacier National Park said in a May 8 Facebook post.
Read is believed to have started his hike on Huckleberry Trail around noon on Friday, according to rangers.
After being made aware that Read was overdue, rangers said they scoured the area in the afternoon on Sunday, May 7.
Read’s empty car was found Sunday on Huckleberry Trail, rangers said.
Two Bear Air Rescue also searched the area Sunday night and “will fly again when weather cooperates,” according to rangers.
A search party of 30 people, including individuals from the park, the U.S. Border patrol and Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, combed the park in the morning on Monday, May 8, rangers said.
Read stands 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs about 210 pounds, according to rangers. He may be wearing a gray and black Columbia rain jacket with either blue and yellow or black and red shoes.

Huckleberry Trail has an elevation gain of about 2,725 feet and is 6 miles round trip, taking about 6 1/2 to 7 hours to complete according to Glacier Guides.
Glacier National Park sits just below the Canadian border, about 140 miles north of Missoula.
