19-year-old Homer man saves two from drowning in Kalamazoo River

HOMER — A 19-year-old Homer man rescued two men from drowning in the Kalamazoo River Friday, according to police.

The Calhoun County Marine Patrol and Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the area of M-60 and N Drive South near Grist Mill Park in Homer for a possible drowning about 3:50 p.m. Friday, June 3.

A 36-year-old Homer man and a 42-year-old Arkansas man were attempting to cross the Kalamazoo River when the two began to struggle in the water, police said.

The 19-year-old overheard the struggle and pulled both men out of the water, according to police.

The Arkansas man received CPR and was transported to Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he was in critical but stable condition, police said.

The Homer man who was rescued was transported to Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall where he was treated, police said.

Police did not identify any of the people involved.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Homer Fire Department and Albion Community Ambulance.
