19-year-old killed as BMW splits in two in Lake Mary crash

A Sanford man was killed in an accident Tuesday night in Lake Mary that left the vehicle split into two pieces, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The victim, 19, was a passenger with two others; a 21-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl. The 21-year-old was driving a 2018 BMW sedan at about 10:30 p.m. north on Country Club Road near Continental Boulevard, said FHP’s Lt. Kim Montes.

The driver failed to recognize the curve in the roadway, left the road and hit a tree, FHP said.

The impact of the vehicle was so hard that the BMW split into two pieces. When first responders arrived, they found the 19-year-old dead at the scene, Montes said.

The two others were taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital. The driver was in critical condition, while the girl suffered minor injuries, Montes said.

Authorities don’t know why the driver apparently didn’t see the curve.

The crash is still under investigation.
