19-year-old murder victim remembered by friends, family. She was studying to be a teacher

Brooke Akins was studying to be a teacher before she was shot and killed in the Loris area on Sunday.

The 19-year-old from Galivants Ferry was in her first semester at Horry-Georgetown Technical College, a part of the applied science teaching program, according to her obituary and HGTC public relation director Nicole Hyman.

Akins’ geography professor, David Holmes, said she was a great student and loved having her in class.

“She sat two rows down from where I lecture and always had a smile on her face,” Holmes said. “Burned in my mind is her smile.”

Horry County Police charged William “Cody” Perritt, of Chadbourn, North Carolina, with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to police and coroner reports. He is currently being held in J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.

It is unclear from police reports what led to the shooting.

Akins and Perritt appeared to have been in a relationship, posting pictures of each other on social media beginning in August of this year.

According to her obituary, Akins loved to spend time with her family and had two dogs. She made posts online showcasing her love for animals. Several people posted about her death on Facebook and her obituary, describing Akins as a sweet, bright and beautiful girl.

“You were so special to me! You were one of my all time favorite students! I taught you at Midland and AHS and your amazing spirit and kindness always shined bright!” Marti Schutte, a PE teacher at Aynor High School, wrote in the condolences for Akins’ online obituary. “Rest in peace angel! You truly touched me and made everyone around you better!”

Akins appeared to have attended Aynor High School.

“A sweet beautiful girl, we all love and will miss your presence,” Brie Mckenith, a longtime classmate, wrote. “Always made us smile when needed, you were the light of the room even if you didn’t speak.”
