Pregnant 19-year-old dead in Baltimore weekend shootings; teen, two others injured, police say

A pregnant 19-year-old woman died and three people, including a 15-year-old boy, were injured after shootings over the weekend in Baltimore, police said.

Jaymyra Burrell died after a shooting early Sunday morning in Northeast Baltimore. Police confirmed Tuesday morning she was pregnant.

Officers responded to a shooting about 3 a.m. at the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue in the Woodbourne Heights neighborhood and found Burrell with gunshot wounds.

The 19-year-old was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after, according to police.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call detectives at 410-396-2100.

A 15-year-old boy is in stable condition after he was shot in the leg Sunday afternoon in East Baltimore, police said.

Officers arrived in the 700 block of North Caroline Street in the Gay Street neighborhood at about 4:25 p.m. The boy was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in his leg.

By 4:50 p.m., police had blocked off a row of homes in the 1400 block of East Monument Street and part of the bike lane. Investigators focused on evidence in the corner of North Caroline and East Monument.

Neighbors just a few houses down said they didn’t hear gunshots Sunday afternoon. Javon Curtis said he had been napping and was unaware of the crime scene outside until a reporter knocked on his door.

“This is East,” he said with a shrug, referring to East Baltimore. “We just have to live here and we have to mind our business.”

The homes at the complex at the corner of Monument and North Caroline have identical orange doors and share a playground in the middle of an off-street parking lot.

Curtis, who lives with his best friend and her children, said the adults in the house instruct the kids to get down when they hear gunshots and to wait until they see red and blue flashing lights to get up. They allow the kids to play at the playground behind their home but are hesitant to let them venture to the one across East Monument.

Detectives ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 410-396-2433.

Another man was injured in an early Saturday morning shooting.

At about 1:36 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 900 block of North Charles Street in Mount Vernon. There, they found a 29-year-old man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in his leg. Medics transported the man to the hospital.
