Morton baseball player voted as the Journal Star high school athlete of the week

Brandon Sieben of the Morton baseball team was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

The centerfielder, who received 540 of 1,511 votes, was a a big hitter in last Friday's 4-2 nonconference victory over St. Joseph-Ogden. Sieben went 2-for-3, hitting a solo home run as part of the Potters' four-run third inning. He added a triple as Morton had eight hits in the game.

Katie Petran, Illinois Valley Central softball

Petran had a big game in beating Illini Bluffs, 2-0 last Thursday. The Butler signee and senior pitcher twirled a one-hitter, striking out 19 in beating the two-time reigning Class 1A state champions. She and teammate Alaina Creamer both hit solo home runs in the third inning for the game's only runs.

Maddie Stickelmaier, Peoria Notre Dame girls soccer

Stickelmaier made a big impact in the season debut. The sophomore midfielder scored a goal and assisted on two more in a 3-0 win over Washington last Tuesday. Her 35-yard free kick found the back of the net for a goal. She assisted on a first-half goal to Jane Greers. Stickelmaier then found her cousin, Alli Stickelmaier, for a score on a corner kick.

Drew Tucker, Metamora boys track & field

In just his second high school meet, Tucker won the high jump at the Class 2A Top Times indoor championship on Saturday. The senior jumped 6'5.25" at the Shirk Center on the Illinois Wesleyan University campus. He set a PR earlier this month by clearing 6'6".

Lindley Johnston, Stark County girls track & field

The senior was a two-event winner at Friday's Class 1A Top Times indoor championship on Friday. Johnston won the 200-meter dash in 25.96 seconds. She then took first in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 59.86 seconds. Both of those times were PRs for the Murray State signee.
