The Golden Globes kicked off Hollywood's awards season on Sunday (January 5) with a night of upsets.

World War One movie "1917" won top prize of best drama, beating out two tough competitors from Netflix: "The Irishman" and "Marriage Story".

It was a big win for a film that's only just arrived in U.S. theaters and whose lead actors are relatively unknown.

Director Sam Mendes.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR/PRODUCER, SAM MENDES SAYING:

"It's difficult to make movies without big movie stars in the leads and get people to come and see it in a cinema, and I really hope this means that people will turn up and see it on a big screen, for which it was intended."

Best comedy or musical went to "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"

Quentin Tarantino's nostalgic film won three prizes - the biggest haul of the night.

Best actor in a drama went to Joaquin Phoenix, who played a terrifying "Joker" and Renee Zellweger for her turn at Judy Garland in "Judy".

Actress Awkwafina made history for her role in The Farewell

She's the first Asian woman to win the top acting prize.

"This is great. Thank you. If anything, if I fall upon hard times, we can sell this, so that's good."

Laura Dern beat out favorite Jennifer Lopez for best supporting actress, playing a ruthless divorce lawyer in "Marriage Story,"

Top TV honors went to HBO's media dynasty show "Succession" and Amazon's quirky British comedy "Fleabag."

The Globes also gave special notice to two veteran performers

Comedian Ellen Degeners and Tom Hanks both received lifetime achievement awards.
