In this archival TODAY interview from 1993, Eddie Van Halen and his Van Halen band members talk about their loyal fan base and the success of their live shows.
- What do you think it is that you guys have that have the fans coming beat down your doorstep?
SAMMY HAGAR: Well, that's funny already, right?
EDDIE VAN HALEN: I think we've always--
SAMMY HAGAR: Are you deaf, dumb, and blind? [LAUGHING]
EDDIE VAN HALEN: I think we've always just been very true to our fans, and we've got the greatest fans in the world. And I think when a person buys a Van Halen ticket, they know what to expect. And we're just a kick ass rock and roll band, and they know what they're going to get when they buy a ticket.
SAMMY HAGAR: Well, you can't say that on TV, so let me repeat that.
EDDIE VAN HALEN: Oh.
SAMMY HAGAR: So what he means is--
EDDIE VAN HALEN: Sure you can.
SAMMY HAGAR: What if you went into the butcher shop, and the butcher said, well today we have filet mignon or hamburger for the same price. Because all tickets are about the same price.
SAMMY HAGAR: What are you going to do? You're going to buy the steak.
EDDIE VAN HALEN: What if you don't eat meat?
SAMMY HAGAR: Then you say, how much is a fish? The guy says twice the price today.
ALEX VAN HALEN: Yeah, then you think, it could be steak.
SAMMY HAGAR: It could be steak.
- OK, give me a profile-- seriously, oh, what a silly word to say here-- of a typical Van Halen fan. Age, as you know them, as they write to you, as they show up at the backstage.
SAMMY HAGAR: Should we use Al's profile? I mean that's-- I see a profile.
ALEX VAN HALEN: Which side? My right side. [LAUGHING]
MICHAEL ANTHONY: They're just like us, right?
EDDIE VAN HALEN: I think they're just people that want to have a good time. And the audience ranges from 13 to 35, or older.
SAMMY HAGAR: I think pretty much it's--
ALEX VAN HALEN: And musicians and non-musicians. I think we're one of the few bands that actually--
SAMMY HAGAR: Attract both, yeah.
ALEX VAN HALEN: --have a musician following, if you will. Other people come check it out because the caliber of the playing is high.
SAMMY HAGAR: But they're pretty much, I think, just like us. If we weren't onstage doing it, they're the same kind of people. They're just kind of--
ALEX VAN HALEN: A bunch of goofballs.
SAMMY HAGAR: But a little bit more. Kind of like, almost like normal people. They're not the far extreme this way, or the far extreme this way.
ALEX VAN HALEN: We get some of them, too, though.
SAMMY HAGAR: Yeah, we do.
ALEX VAN HALEN: We get a little bit of everything.
SAMMY HAGAR: Those are the musicians. [LAUGHING]
