For the 1st time, health department reports over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases in Fayette

For the first time in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department announced over 1,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day for Fayette County.

Tuesday’s exact count is 1,040 new cases, although the number is expected to be higher once workers go through the backlog of cases. The seven-day rolling average is 908, according to the health department.

125 Fayette County residents are hospitalized with Covid, per the health department. 26 of those patients are in the ICU, 11 of whom require a ventilator.

80% of the hospitalized patients are unvaccinated, according to the health department. 92% of the ICU patients are unvaccinated and all 11 on the ventilator are unvaccinated.

Fayette Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said in his weekly COVID update Tuesday night that from Jan. 18 to Jan. 25 there were 1,150 new student cases and 279 new staff cases among the district’s. 42,000 students and 8,000 employees.

That’s up from Jan. 11 to Jan. 17 when 794 new student cases and 172 new staff cases were included in Liggins report.

The health department is continuing to urge people who have not done so already to get vaccinated. The health department is offering same day appointments every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Public Health Clinic on Newtown Pike.
