1st U.S. priest to die of COVID-19 remembered in Brooklyn

Father Jorge Ortiz-Garay is a Mexican-born Brooklyn pastor, who died a year ago at the age of 49.

- A touching memorial mass to remember the first Catholic priest to die of COVID-19 in the United States. Father Jorge Ortiz-Garay, a Mexican-born Brooklyn pastor died a year ago at the age of 49. Father Jorge was ordained in the priesthood in 2004 in Newark. He was assigned at the Diocese of Brooklyn in 2009. The bishop of Brooklyn also held a memorial mass at St. Bridget Church in Bushwick where father Jorge served as a pastor.

NICHOLAS DIMARZIO: He was a priest and a father to those whom he served here in Brooklyn and Queens, not just this parish, but through the Spanish apostolate, through the Mexican apostolate, through those Guadalupanos. He served so many more.

- A total of four masses were scheduled yesterday in memory of father Jorge.
