$2.5 million 'ultra contemporary' home is looking to wow potential buyers in Salisbury Oaks

3848 River Oaks Dr., Des Moines

An uncommon, “ultra contemporary” luxury residence has been listed for sale in the Salisbury Oaks neighborhood of Des Moines, hoping to attract potential homebuyers who are looking for a non-traditional space and can also afford its $2.5 million asking price.

Designed from scratch with a modern aesthetic by Kris McVicker of Marc Kris Modern Homes, the 3,855-square-foot property includes four bedrooms, five bathrooms, three family rooms and a four-car garage.

Located south of Grand Ave., the 0.48-acre lot sits on the far south edge of the district and was purposely designed to take full advantage of its southern-facing views.

Stephanie Thomas of RE/MAX Concepts is representing the seller and reveals McVicker chose not to install window coverings in the main living spaces. “She didn’t want to break up the wall of glass, and distract from the seasons, the trees, the woods and the river," she said.

The home looks down onto the horse stables of Irish Run Farms, plus bike and walking trails, and the Raccoon River, views that can be enjoyed from inside or on the outdoor patio.

Despite the modern layout and striking white color scheme, Thomas says prospective buyers have described the interior atmosphere as “spa-like,” and “calm and tranquil,” she said.

Thomas said McVicker didn’t build the home with “one type of family in mind,” but the open layout creates plenty of opportunities for an owner who likes to entertain guests. A common question among recent visitors has been if the furniture and art are part of the seven-figure asking price.

“She would consider leaving, or selling the furnishings, if the buyer requests it,” Thomas said, including a piano that resides on the mezzanine level.

To balance the neutral color palate, the interior has been decorated with floral tapestries, colorful wallpapers and “chandeliers which are stunning and almost more like sculptures to me,” Thomas said.

From 1947 until 2019, a single-family ranch home occupied the lot. McVicker purchased the property, razed the house and produced a new landscape, creating a distinctive contrast to other residences along River Oak Drive.

“Even though South of Grand is primarily traditional homes, it is also filled with many unique homes of lots of different ages. And just because it's an established neighborhood doesn't mean that the people in those neighborhoods don't love unique homes,” Thomas said.

The property is listed at $2,500,000 by Stephanie Thomas of RE/MAX Concepts. Contact (515) 771-7788 to tour this home or similar properties.
