This $2,950-a-month apartment for rent in California is causing a stir online. Here’s why

A two-bedroom apartment for rent in San Luis Obispo is causing a stir on social media.

The apartment is located at The Junction, a newly constructed 69-unit, multi-story apartment building at 2120 Santa Barbara Ave.

It’s being leased by San Luis Obispo property management company Era Management Co., Inc.

What is The Junction in SLO?

The Junction brings “a distinctive personality and inspired vision to the heart of downtown SLO,” its website says, with a sawtooth roof design and “unique and highly amenitized common spaces purpose-built to enhance and contribute to the social and playful lifestyle” of the Central Coast city.

Next to Miner’s Ace Hardware, the property features an onsite fitness center, assigned off-street parking and a large courtyard with a shared barbecue area and fire pit.

Cats and small dogs are allowed in most units at The Junction, a rarity for the San Luis Obispo rental market.

What does 2-bedroom apartment include?

According to the listing by Era Management, the 818-square-foot, ground-floor unit available for lease at The Junction features a full bathroom, a dining/great room, a terrace and a kitchen with a stainless steel dishwasher, refrigerator and electric stove/oven. An in-unit washer and dryer is available for an additional fee.

“This large unit has the ability to have two bedrooms or a bedroom with office,” the listing says.

That’s what has some up in arms.

Reddit user genaricgoblin shared the Zillow listing for the apartment on the SLO subreddit on Tuesday, asking “How can they lease this as 2 bed when there’s not a wall between bedrooms??”

“How do developers keep getting away with things like this?” genaricgoblin wrote on Reddit. “Is there really nothing normal people can do to afford to live here??”

Although photos and a site plan of the unit show doors accessing both bedroom areas, there are only small partial walls separating the two, photos show.

“Imagine paying 3k a month and you don’t even have a bedroom wall,” Reddit user Imwhatswrongwithyou commented. “Last I knew a bedroom has to have a closet. I’ve never thought to ask about a wall.”

“This is starting to be disgusting,” the person wrote.

How much does unit cost to rent?

The two-bedroom apartment is available to rent for $2,950 a month, with a $45 application fee and a $3,500 security deposit.

However, that doesn’t cover utilities, according to the listing.

Parking costs $50 a month, while laundry is $50 a month and internet is $60 a month.

In contrast, a 414-square-foot studio apartment at The Junction leases for $2,150 a month, while a one-bedroom unit with 634 square feet of space rents for $2,550 monthly.

There’s also a furnished 446-square-foot studio available for $3,650 a month.
