2 adults, 2 children killed in head-on collision on US 87 near Hartley; 2 others injured

The Department of Public Safety released information about a Friday afternoon crash in Hartley County that left four dead and others injured.

According to a news release, at 6:10 p.m., approximately seven miles east of Hartley, a 2019 Honda HR-V driven by Maurice Jefferson, 33, of Dumas, was traveling west on US 87 while a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Eugene Trujillo, 59 of Clayton, New Mexico, was traveling east on US 87.

For unknown reasons, the Honda veered into the eastbound lane of travel in the path of the Tahoe. Trujillo attempted to avoid the collision by steering the vehicle to the left, while Jefferson attempted to avoid the collision by steering the Honda back into the westbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision, DPS said.

Jefferson died on the scene. Two young passengers in the Honda, an 11-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, both of Dumas, also died on the scene. They were pronounced dead by Harley County Judge Ronnie Gordon. A third passenger, Abbie Serbin, 32, of Dumas was taken to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries. All were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Trujillo was taken to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries. A passenger in the Tahoe, Diana Segura, 62 of Clayton, N.M., died on the scene. She was pronounced dead by Harley County Judge Gordon. Both Trujillo and Segura were also wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The posted speed limit was 75 mph, and road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
