WORCESTER — Almost as quickly as flames and smoke were seen pouring from the attic of a single-family home on Merriwether Road, city firefighters arrived and extinguished a two-alarm fire early Sunday afternoon.

The home's occupants escaped unharmed and no injuries were reported as crews battled the fire and frigid temperatures around 12:30 p.m. at 13 Merriwether Road.

The fire was the latest in what has been a busy weekend for city fire crews as extreme cold weather gripped the region.

A three-alarm fire Friday night destroyed a home on Wayne Street, displacing its residents, and in nearby Charlton Saturday, fire also damaged a home that was met with a multi-town response.
