2 Annawan-Wethersfield girls competed in the 1A state track meet Saturday

Annawan-Wethersfield’s Cassidy Miller and Kennady Anderson competed for medals in the finals of their events at the IHSA Class 1A state track meet on Saturday, May 21.

With a throw of 36 feet, 1 inch, Miller finished ninth in the shot put prelims on Thursday, May 19, at O’Brien Stadium, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston. The top 12 advanced to the finals, which was on Saturday.

Kennady Anderson qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run and the 1600 run on Saturday on the famous blue track. She was second overall in both events during prelims on Thursday. Anderson set both school records and personal bests in each event.

Anderson finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 15.91 seconds. She ran the 1600 in 5:08.41, only .05 of a second behind the winner.

On Thursday, the only girl faster than Anderson was Ahry Comer of Golconda Pope County. She clocked 2:14.13 in the 800 and 5:08.36 in the 1600.

The top nine in each event received medals.

Titans Ally Celus, Bella VanOpdorp, Madison Rusk and Kaylee Celus just missed qualifying for finals in the 400 relay. They finished 11th when only the top nine advanced. Their time was 50.83, and they needed to beat 50.75.

The girls were fourth in a heat with three of the top 10 teams, and two of the three teams above them qualified for Saturday’s competition.

Also competing at state on Thursday were:

• Kaylee Celus, Olivia Goodley, Danielle Johnson, Anderson, 16th in the 1600 relay, 4:18.01.

• Ally Celus, Alevia Dickens, VanOpdorp, Rusk, 17th in the 800 relay, 1:51.49.

• Rusk, 19th in the 100 dash, 12.79 seconds.

• Kaylee Celus, 25th in the 300 hurdles, 51.85.

• Brody Garcia, 26th in the discus, 94 feet, 1-1/2 inches.
