2 Cal Poly pitchers selected on the third day of the MLB Draft

Cal Poly pitchers Derek True and Bryce Warrecker become the next two Mustangs to get their shot at playing pro baseball when their names were called during the MLB Draft on Tuesday.

True was selected by the Houston Astros in the 18th round, while Warrecker was picked by the New York Yankees in the 20th round.

Both pitchers attended Santa Barbara High School and were standout players in the area before attending Cal Poly.

True, a junior reliever, had a career 5.18 ERA in 58 appearances. This past season he posted career-bests in ERA (3.90) and strikeouts (38).

One of the Mustangs’ top options out of the bullpen, True was also drafted last season, in the 20th round by the Oakland Athletics, before he opted to stay another year.

Warrecker sported a 4.96 ERA in 2023 in 14 starts. He struck out 79 batters, which doubled his total of 30 from the 2022 season.

The 6-foot-8 pitcher was 8-10 in his career across 45 appearances.

Warrecker had a standout summer ball season with the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod League. He finished with a 4-1 record and a 2.07 ERA in 10 appearences. He was also named the Cape Cod League’s Most Outstanding Pitcher.

True and Warrecker bring the total number of Cal Poly baseball players drafted to 168. Ten players were drafted twice. A total of 21 Mustangs have reached the majors, 12 of whom came under Head Coach Larry Lee.

The Mustangs finished the 2023 season 21-35 and 11-19 in conference play.
