Two people died and one person was injured as a result of a two-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon in Childress County.

On Thursday, Aug. 24 at about 1:10 p.m., a 2004 Toyota Tundra was stopped, facing west at the divided highway stop sign on the southbound side of US 287, approximately seven miles northwest of Childress. A 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 was traveling south on US 287 and approaching the intersection where the Toyota was stopped, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The driver of the Toyota, identified as Frances Woodard, 85, of Childress, attempted to cross over the southbound lanes to start traveling north on US 287. DPS said Woodard failed to yield the right of way to southbound traffic and pulled out onto the roadway in the path of the Dodge.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as Jesus Juan, 64, of Katy, attempted to apply his brakes but could not stop in time to avoid a collision.

The Dodge struck the Toyota on the driver's side door, and DPS said both vehicles came to rest in the center median. Neither of the Toyota's occupants were wearing a seat belt.

Woodard was pronounced dead at the scene by Childress County Justice of the Peace Melissa Harper. A passenger, identified as Mary Watts, 84, of Childress, was airlifted to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital, where she later died from injuries she sustained in the crash.

Juan, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Childress Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

The posted speed limit was 75 mph, and road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
