2 dead, 3 injured after 2 unrelated crashes near Lewes, Bridgeville last week, police say

An 88-year-old man and a 74-year-old man, both from Millsboro, have died from injuries in unrelated car crashes last week, Delaware State Police announced Monday night. Neither of their identities has been released.

The 88-year-old man, Ronald Bushemi, was injured on May 4 after failing to stop at a stop sign near Bridgeville, police said. The man was heading north in a BMW 325 on Atlanta Road at 10:40 a.m., according to police, and entered the intersection at Federalsburg Road without stopping.

At the same time, a 50-year-old woman from Maryland driving east on Federalsburg Road drove into the intersection, hitting the side of the BMW with the front of her Ford Transit van, according to police.

The crash sent the van spinning off the road and caused the BMW to crash into a fence, police said. Both were wearing seat belts. They were taken to the hospital, where the woman was treated for "minor injuries," according to police. Bushemi died in the hospital on Sunday.

On Saturday, a 74-year-old Edward J. Mazewski died in the hospital after he was injured in a four-car crash near Lewes on Thursday afternoon, state police reported. A 54-year-old man from Georgetown and his passenger also received "minor injuries," according to police.

Mazewski was heading east in a Chevrolet Captiva on Lewes-Georgetown Highway near Lewes at 1:46 p.m. on Thursday, police said. In front of him, three other cars were slowing down for traffic. Mazewski did not slow down "for unknown reasons," state police said, and rear-ended the Subaru Forester in front of him.

The impact sent the Subaru crashing into a GMC Sierra in front of it, which then crashed into the back of a Ford F-150, according to police. The driver and passenger of the Sierra – the second car hit in the crash – were both injured, but were not taken to the hospital.

Mazewski was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. He died there on Saturday.
