2 dead after car drives off Midlands interstate ramp and flips several times

Two are dead following a Richland County car crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2000 Mercury SUV was traveling north on Interstate 77, about 3 miles from Columbia, at approximately 8:20 p.m. Saturday night, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

The car got onto a ramp toward Interstate 20 and drove off the road to the right when it struck an embankment and flipped over several times, Ridgeway said.

The driver, who was from Myrtle Beach, and the passenger, who was from Sumter, both died on the scene, Ridgeway said.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly released details about the deceased.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the collision.

As of Sunday, 748 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
