2 dead in early-morning fire at Burlington Township apartments

BURLINGTON TWP. – An early-morning apartment fire claimed the lives of two people here.

The victims were Sandra Stevenson, 62, and Eric Stevenson, 28, both of Burlington Township, according to Burlington Township police.

The fire was reported at the Northgate Village Apartments around 3 a.m., when police learned of smoke coming from a resident's window.

Upon arrival, officers observed heavy smoke coming from an apartment on the 300 block of Northgate Village Road.

Officers attempted to enter the home, but were driven back by heavy smoke until firefightrs put the blaze partially under control.

Firefighters removed the victims from the apartment and first responders administered CPR.

Both victims were determined to be dead at the scene, however.

The fire was contained to one apartment and no other injuries were reported, police said.

The apartments are located off the Burlington Bypass, near Route 541.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, and both the township and county fire marshal's offices.
