Giant Eagle worker, ex-husband dead in apparent murder-suicide at Northeast Ohio Giant Eagle
Police in North Olmsted are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that left two dead at a Giant Eagle grocery store Sunday morning.
Police said 60-year-old Bernard Smith fatally shot his ex-wife, Susan Petterson, 63, while she was working at the store.
During a news conference at 2:30 p.m., North Olmsted Police Chief Bob Wagner said officers were called to the store around 9:30 a.m. and found Petterson and Smith dead from gunshot wounds.
There were about 200 customers as well as 67 employees in the store when the shooting occurred.
Witnesses told Beacon Journal news partner News 5 Cleveland they heard multiple gunshots inside the store.
"We're very, very fortunate that no one else was hurt or injured," Wagner said.
Petterson, who lived in Olmsted Falls, had been a Giant Eagle employee for three years and eight months. She had been divorced from Smith, who lived in Cleveland, since 2004.
