2 dead in small plane crash in Pennsylvania, flight was headed to Ocean City

Two people are dead after a small twin-engine plane crashed in Central Pennsylvania on Father's Day, federal officials confirmed Tuesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration told USA TODAY the Piper PA-30 airplane crashed Sunday in a wooded area of Cambria County.

The plane went down not far from the Ebensburg Airport in a mountainous region on the Allegheny Plateau about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh, officials said.

Cambria County Coroner Jeffrey Lees said the plane was reported missing on Sunday morning and the aircraft was located at about 2:30 p.m. that same day.

Both people on the plane were pronounced dead at the scene, Lees said, and DNA testing will be used to confirm the victim's identities.

Cause of crash remains under investigation

Local outlets reported the plane was headed to Ocean City, Maryland.

A FAA spokesperson told USA TODAY Monday the agency and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
