2 found dead in Northwest Alaska home destroyed by fire, troopers say

Jan. 30—Two people were found dead inside a home that caught fire Friday night in Kotzebue, Alaska State Troopers said Monday.

A person passing by the building on Whittier Street alerted the Kotzebue Fire Department just after 9:30 p.m., troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said in an email. The fire department said the single-family residential building "was found to be consumed by the fire."

It wasn't immediately clear if anyone was inside the building, troopers said. Several hours after the fire was reported, the remains of two people were found.

A deputy fire marshal responded from Anchorage to investigate, troopers said.

The remains of the people who died were sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for identification, troopers said. DeSpain said it was not immediately clear if they lived at the home.

The home had extensive damage and is a total loss, DeSpain said. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
