2 high school basketball showcases in the area this weekend
The big high school basketball showcases will take place this weekend.
In Bradenton, the Ascender Classic will be held Friday and Saturday at IMG Academy. There are six games Friday and seven games Saturday on two courts.
Area teams playing Friday include Palmetto against IMG Academy White at 4:30 p.m.; IMG Academy Blue against Stockbridge (Ga.) New Faith Christian Academy at 5:15 p.m.; Lakewood Ranch against Bradenton Christian at 6 p.m.; and IMG Academy National against Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep Charter at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Bradenton Christian plays Parrish Community at 11:45 a.m.; Fort Myers Gateway plays Palmetto at 12:30 p.m.; IMG Academy White plays Lakewood Ranch at 2 p.m.; IMG Academy Blue plays Oldsmar Christian Academy at 2:15 p.m.; and IMG National plays Baltimore (Md.) Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 4:15 p.m.
In Punta Gorda, the 16th Annual Wally Keller Classic will take place Friday and Saturday at Charlotte High. There will be six games Friday and 13 games Saturday on the two courts.
Area teams taking the court Friday are Port Charlotte against Science Hill of Johnson City (Tenn.), coached by former Tarpon assistant coach Ken Cutlip, at 5:40 p.m.; Charlotte against Tallahassee FSU School, coached by former Heisman Trophy winner and 11-year NBA player Charlie Ward, at 7:20 p.m.; and the Charlotte High girls against Science Hill at 6:20 p.m.
On Saturday, Riverview plays Tampa Catholic at noon; Victory Rock plays Naples Barron Collier at 1 p.m.; Venice plays Winter Haven at 2:40 p.m.; Science Hill plays North Port at 6 p.m.; Lemon Bay plays Fort Myers Evangelical Christian at 7:40 p.m.; and Charlotte plays Port Charlotte at 8:20 p.m.
