2 injured in Saratoga Street shooting in Utica; police seek video footage

Utica police are investigating a shooting that left two victims injured on the 900 block of Saratoga Street on Thursday evening.

One victim was struck in the leg and one in the back, police said. The Utica Fire Department transported the victims to the St. Elizabeth Campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System for treatment; both are expected to survive, police said.

Police determined the suspects, who police did not describe, approached a group of individuals from a yard on the east side of Saratoga Street and began firing, then fled.

Investigators are seeking surveillance footage of nearby streets or any additional information by contacting the department’s major crimes unit at 315-223-3556 or Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-866-730-8477 or mohawkvalleycrimestoppers.com.

Utica police Sgt. Mike Curley said investigators are exploring any connection between this and other shootings, and if it is gang related, but there is nothing definitive yet.

Most shooting incidents in Utica involve a single victim, but there have been multiple incidents in the recent past with multiple victims, Curley said. The likelihood of multiple shootings is there when suspects fire indiscriminately into a crowd, he said.
