2 injured in Yonkers wrong way crash after police chase into Bronx for theft

Yonkers police say two people were injured on the New York State Thruway in Yonkers after a brief police chase ended in a car crash Wednesday night.

Yonkers police said they were alerted to a theft near McLean Avenue. Police found the suspect at the Cross County Shopping center, where he fled the scene in his car and entered the wrong side of the Thruway northbound towards the Bronx.

Police said they stopped the chase and proceeded to look for the suspect's vehicle on the correct southbound lanes of I-87 when said they found the suspect's car had collided with another, injuring a man and woman from the Bronx who are in stable condition.

Yonkers police say they have identified a suspect but are not yet releasing his name. Police said that since the crash happened in the Bronx, NYPD will continue the investigation of the accident as a separate incident from the theft and are still looking for the suspect independently.
