2 juveniles hospitalized in crash of stolen vehicle Akron police had been chasing
Two juveniles were hospitalized following a crash Wednesday, including a 10-year-old boy and the 16-year-old driver of a stolen car after fleeing from police and crashing into another vehicle, police said.
Two men in a Jeep Commander declined treatment at the scene after their vehicle was struck by the stolen car at Dietz and Archwood avenues in South Akron, said Akron Police Capt. David Laughlin.
Akron police had not released details of the crash until asked about it by the Akron Beacon Journal on Friday. Reports also had not been posted to the department's website.
Laughlin said the city's Flock Safety surveillance cameras identified the car the juveniles were in as being reported stolen about 4:35 p.m. Officers on duty found the vehicle and reported it failed to stop.
"Officers called out that they were in a pursuit on Brown Street," Laughlin said. "Within 15 seconds, they lost sight of the car in the area of Brown Street and N. Firestone Boulevard and canceled the chase."
He said officers checking the area to locate the stolen car were flagged down by a citizen who notified them of the crash, about a block away from where police broke off the pursuit.
Police saw the 16-year-old driver running south on Dietz and arrested him. The three other juveniles were lying in the street, Laughlin said.
Multiple Akron Fire Department units responded and took the 16-year-old and a 10-year old to Akron Children’s Hospital. Laughlin described the 10-year-old's injuries as "serious." Two other boys, ages 14 and 15, who were passengers in the stolen vehicle, were uninjured.
The driver was charged with three counts: aggravated vehicular assault, willful fleeing and receiving stolen property.
The 14-year-old was arrested on a robbery warrant from the Canton Police Department.
The 15-year-old was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
