2 kayakers vanish after getting swept over dam, Indiana officials say. Bodies now found
The bodies of two kayakers who went missing after being swept over a dam on April 16 have been recovered, Indiana officials said.
Officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said the body of 22-year-old Solomon Shirley was recovered from the White River on the morning of April 22.
The body of 30-year-old Marcus Robinson, who went missing with Shirley, was recovered in the evening of April 22, DNR officials confirmed to McClatchy News.
On April 16, a 911 caller reported seeing two kayakers capsize near Belmont Beach and not resurface, according to an Indianapolis Fire Department Facebook post.
Officials said the men “traveled over the remnants of a low-head dam.”
Search teams located the two kayaks that night near the bank but found “no signs of the occupants,” both from Indianapolis, officials said.
DNR officials told WISH that the men were kayaking during a flood stage.
According to experts, White River water levels are the highest they’ve been in more than 20 years, making conditions even more dangerous, WTHR reported.
Multiple state and local agencies assisted with the days-long search, officials said.
