2 killed, 2 wounded in shooting at Juárez funeral vigil

Two people were killed and two others were wounded in a shooting attack during a funeral vigil Sunday night in Juárez.

Gunmen opened fire, killing a couple mourning the loss of their 18-year-old son at a vigil at a house in the Tierra y Libertad (Land and Liberty) neighborhood in the central part of the city, El Heraldo de Juárez reported. The couple's son had been killed in a shooting Thursday.

Those killed in the shooting were: a woman (who was about 38 years old) and a man (who was about 40), the Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office said.

Another person was wounded along with a neighbor who is a municipal police officer and was attending the vigil, officials said. Investigators found 15 9-mm bullet casings at the scene.

The deadly attack at the vigil was among nine homicides in Juárez over the weekend, including the dismembered body of a man found in trash bags Sunday morning along a dirt road near the Camino Real highway, according to news reports.

There have been more than 60 homicides in Juárez this month, pushing the year's total for violent deaths past 150, less than two full months into 2023.

3 more Juárez prison escapees captured

Over the weekend, Chihuahua state police captured three more fugitives who had escaped on Jan. 1 during the mass breakout from Cereso No. 3 state prison in Juárez, officials said.

Mexican security forces have now captured or killed 25 of 30 inmates who fled during the bloody attack and riot on the morning of New Year’s Day.

An operation involving SWAT officers, state police and detectives resulted in the arrests of Daniel Andres Rodriguez Cardozo, 22, who had been jailed on drug charges, and Brian Eduardo de Santiago Samaro, 19, who was imprisoned on a weapons charge. The two fugitives were found in the Nuevo Hipodromo area near the Juárez airport, state police said in a statement.

Investigators then obtained information leading to the capture of Ulises H.V., alias "El Flaco," who had been imprisoned on a homicide charge and who was taken into custody in the Parajes de San Isidro area of southeastern Juárez, police said. His full name was not disclosed by authorities.
