2 killed in crash on NY Thruway in Genesee County

A Rochester woman was one of two people killed Sunday in a single-vehicle crash on the New York state Thruway in Genesee County.

According to New York State Police, Thomas T. Cartmel, 64, of Crossville, Alabama, was driving a pickup west on the highway when he drove off the right shoulder and through a grassy area and struck the Slusser Road bridge in Pembroke around 5 p.m. The truck was towing a trailer, which became detached and came to rest vertically against the overpass, troopers said.

Cartmel and his passenger Deborah J. Burrelli, 67, of Rochester were both pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. They were both taken to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies.

State Police are investigating the crash, which snarled westbound traffic on Sunday evening.
