Two people died Sunday night in a fiery crash on the William V Roth Jr. Bridge in Saint Georges, Delaware State Police said Monday.

Troopers were called to the bridge shortly before 10:30 p.m. for reports of the multi-vehicle wreck. There, they found a 2010 Toyota Sequoia ablaze, police said.

According to police, a tractor trailer was driving south in the center lane of Route 1 when it began struggling to get up the bridge.

The driver turned on the truck's hazard lights because it was traveling slowly, though it's unclear whether a Hyundai Elantra, which was in the right lane of Route 1 south, saw it. As the Hyundai changed lanes, it hit the back of the tractor trailer, damaging its wheels.

The damage caused the truck to be stuck in the middle lane. The Hyundai was able to pull to the right shoulder.

While the tractor trailer was stopped, the Toyota drove up and hit the back of it again. On impact, the Toyota caught fire.

Once the fire was extinguished, first responders found two people in the car. Due to their injuries, they haven't been identified. Their DNA will need to be analyzed to determine who they are, police said.

The 31-year-old driver of the tractor trailer was taken to a local hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries, police said. The 54-year-old driver of the Hyundai wasn't hurt.

Route 1 south was closed for about five hours while the crash was investigated.
