These 2 massive retailers closing Johnson County stores this weekend. Look for deals

Say bye-bye to Buybuy Baby.

The big-box retailer of strollers, car seats and other items for babies and young children has closed its Independence location and will close its Overland Park store on Sunday.

The chain’s parent company, Bed Bath & Beyond, filed for bankruptcy in April. Buybuy Baby’s assets were sold at auction to Dream on Me, a New Jersey retailer that opted to close Buybuy Baby’s physical stores.

The shelves in Overland Park (12055 Metcalf Ave.) were getting bare on Wednesday evening, but baby clothes, nursing bras and a variety of toys were still available, marked down 70% to 90%.

Bed Bath & Beyond, next door at 12035 Metcalf Ave., will also close Sunday. The online retailer Overstock.com bought its assets at auction and closed all its stores nationwide. It was more picked over on Wednesday, though there were still plenty of deals on bedsheets, shower curtains and glassware.

The Independence Buybuy Baby location, which closed last month, was near Independence Center.

Founded in 1971, Bed Bath & Beyond became a go-to destination for housewares, small kitchen appliances, wedding registries and college dorm supplies. But business began to cool in 2010, as Amazon, Wayfair, Walmart and Target grew.

Last fall, the retailer still had 949 locations, including 762 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and 137 Buybuy Baby stores nationwide.
