2 men charged in connection with Glasgow Park shooting that injured 16-year-old girl

Two men have been charged in connection with the June shooting of a 16-year-old girl at Glasgow Park, New Castle County Police said in a release Friday afternoon.

Both men were arrested in separate states: a 19-year-old Wilmington man was arrested in Springfield, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 10, while a 21-year-old Newark man was arrested in New York City Thursday.

What happened during the shooting?

New Castle County Police were dispatched to Glasgow Park, located at 2199 Pulaski Highway, about 1:30 a.m. on June 15 in reference to a shooting.

Arriving officers found a large party dispersing from the park. They also found a teen girl who was suffering from a gunshot wound. The girl was taken to a local hospital.

Following a lengthy investigation, police said the two men were identified as suspects and arrest warrants were issued for them, charging the men with one felony count of assault in the first degree, one felony count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and one felony count of reckless endangering.

With the help of out-of-state police, the men were arrested.

The 19-year-old has been extradited from Pennsylvania and arraigned in Delaware, where he remains in custody after failing to post $180,000 cash bail.

The 21-year-old man remains in New York where he is awaiting extradition to Delaware.

Problems at the park

The girl's shooting was just one in a string of incidents that occurred at the popular park earlier this year.

In May, the park was closed temporarily after a bomb threat was reported by the Maryland State Police. County police searched the parkland and did not find explosives.

Officers also stopped a sexual assault incident at the park in early May when a 48-year-old man from Newark was pulled over with a 14-year-old girl in his car. He was charged with sexual solicitation of a child.

These and other incidents caused police to hold a town hall meeting at the park on July 13 to discuss safety concerns.

New Castle County Police Chief Col. Joseph Bloch spoke to a sizable crowd, detailing efforts that the police department is making to alleviate worries over the safety of the park. These efforts include an increased police presence, rotating the Mounted Patrol Unit to the park and continued recruitment for a cadet program that's been slow-moving since the spring with a lack of qualified applicants.
