2 men indicted for allegedly assaulting Abilene convenience store clerk

A Taylor County grand jury Thursday indicted two men for allegedly attacking a North Abilene convenience store clerk in early May.

Charles Mayes II and Willie Tutt, also known as Willie James Tutt Jr., were indicted on one charge each of aggravated robbery and robbery in connection with the incident May 3 at a convenience store in the 800 block of Grape Street, according to court documents.

A customer informed the clerk that Mayes and Tutt allegedly had taken a case of water. The clerk went outside to confront the two suspects, and Mayes allegedly "got up" in the clerk's face while telling Tutt to go get "that thing," the document said.

The clerk believed "that thing" was a gun, the document said.

As Mayes and the clerk tussled, Tutt returned and was holding a handgun by the barrel like a hammer, the document said.

The clerk grabbed a bread tray to defend himself from the two men. Tutt hit the clerk on the head with the gun more than once, the document said, and the victim suffered a laceration on the back of the head.

The two suspects fled in a moving truck pulling a trailer and later were located by officers. After detaining the suspects, officers searched the area and located the victim's wallet near the back passenger side rear tire. Police also found a firearm and two magazines behind a tree and across the street from the vehicle, the document said.

In a separate case, Tutt also was indicted for a charge of aggravated assault for allegedly pointing a gun at a man he recognized walking through a gas station parking lot in the 3800 block of South First on Sept. 30, according to a court document.

Tutt allegedly dated the victim's daughter, the document said.
