2 Michigan-based companies score Top 10s in a national workplace survey

Scores of companies either headquartered in Michigan or with a significant presence in the state have been named a 2023 Top Workplace in the national contest that celebrates outstanding employers.

Two companies headquartered in Michigan — Detroit-based Ally Financial and Southfield-based Credit Acceptance— were ranked in the Top 10 in their respective size categories. Ally was ranked No. 10 in the largest category, and Credit Acceptance was ranked No. 8 in the second-largest category.

Altogether, 33 Michigan-based companies — or those with a significant presence in the state — ranked in the Top 100 in their size category.

Energage, the Philadelphia-based company behind the program, said 1,272 winners, including those with Top 100 ranks, were recognized in four size groups. The groups are based on the number of employees a company has. Winners were chosen based solely on employee feedback gathered through an employee engagement survey.

Companies are competing fiercely for workers as remote work continues to be a factor in hiring, Energage officials said in a news release. So being known as a place employees choose to work is important.

“Being an employer of choice through a recognition program, especially in this environment, is key," said Eric Rubino, Energage CEO. "It’s paramount that employers differentiate themselves as an employer of choice. We really need workplaces that inspire employees. You have to really acknowledge employees genuinely and consistently.”

The Top 100 recognition in each size category was new this year. The size categories are 150-499 employees; 500-999; 1,000-2,499, and 2,500-plus.

Energage also works with media organizations in the U.S. to recognize companies by state.

Top Workplaces USA is meant to recognize large organizations and those that might have operations in multiple markets. Several thousand companies from across the country were invited to seek recognition in this year's competition, and more than 3,300 chose to participate in an employee engagement survey, Energage said Wednesday in the news release.

Energage compares employee responses to statements made in the survey with industry benchmarks to calculate winners. The surveys for 2023 Top Workplaces USA were administered over 12 months, through November 2022.

Any organization with at least 150 employees in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam could participate, except for franchisees of local real estate firms, hotels and restaurants. The contest also excludes K-12 schools.
