2-minute drill: Apple Duathlon celebrates 40 years, St. Cloud native makes Team USA roster

The Apple Duathlon returns to Sartell for the 40th anniversary and an opportunity to continue growing in the Central Minnesota area.

Active Central MN, a nonprofit organization that focuses on building and sustaining local events, will be the host agency for the Apple Duathlon.

The 5K race will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, May 20. The duathlon will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, for the long course and 8:45 a.m. for the sprint course.

Registration for the races as well as registration for volunteers can be found on the Apple Duathlon website.

St. Cloud's Nate Schmidt selected to Team USA

Former Cathedral and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities hockey player Nate Schmidt was selected on the U.S. Men's National Team for the International Ice Hockey Federation's Men's World Championships.

The championships will take place in Helsinki, Finland, starting play on Friday, May 13. Schmidt is a current player for the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL and sits at 30 years old, which is the oldest player on the 24-man roster for Team USA.

The team has won bronze four times in the last eight years at the IIHF World Championships. Most recently, those bronze medals came in 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2021.

Schmidt played for the Crusaders from 2006-09 and then played one season with the Fargo Force. After, he went to the Twin Cities and played for the Golden Gophers from 2010-13. He's played with the Washington Capitals, Las Vegas Golden Knights and Vancouver Canucks before playing for the Jets now in the NHL.
