LANSING — A 2-year-old boy who police said was apparently left alone inside a vehicle with a gun Tuesday afternoon and shot himself has died, police said.

"The Lansing Police Department is saddened to report the 2-year-old has passed away from his injuries," Lansing Police Department spokeswoman Jordan Gulkis said in an update Wednesday night.

Charges are pending with the Ingham County Prosecutors Office, she added.

The shooting happened shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday in the 3000 block of Dunckel Road. Responding officers arrived to find the toddler with a gunshot wound.

The Lansing Fire Department transported the boy to a hospital in critical condition, Gulkis said.

"It is believed the child was alone in the car and had unsupervised access to the weapon," Gulkis said Tuesday.

A 44-year-old male suspect ran from the scene but was later arrested, she said.
