Father and daughter dead after SUV strikes them, crashes into buildings in Des Plaines, police say

Police are investigating a deadly car crash that killed a father and daughter Sunday afternoon in Des Plaines.

Shortly after 12:15 p.m., a Honda SUV traveling east on Northwest Highway crossed the westbound lanes of traffic, exited the road and struck Neal Greenfield, 80, of Skokie, and his daughter Kimberly Karsen, 42, of Arlington Heights, as they were walking to their vehicle. The car also hit two buildings, at 454 and 456 Northwest Highway, according to police.

The driver of the SUV, a 71-year-old man from Des Plaines, told police he suffered a medical emergency that caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

The father and daughter were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where they died of their injuries, according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Greenfield was pronounced dead at 12:35 p.m. and Karsen was pronounced dead at 12:45 p.m.

Police said the driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were two children in the van at the time of the crash, but neither suffered any serious injuries, according to police.

The Des Plaines Fire Department worked with Nicor Gas to secure the area Sunday afternoon, given that the crash resulted in a gas leak in a building, according to police.

Police said they do not believe at this time that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
