2 people shot and killed inside Georgia Walmart in apparent murder-suicide, police say

Two people were shot and killed in a Georgia Walmart Wednesday in an apparent murder-suicide, police told local media.

Police said the shooting of a man and a woman took place around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in a Walmart Super Center in Hiram, Georgia, a small town about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta.

The man and woman were taken to the hospital, according to Hiram police chief Mike Turner, and both died from their injuries in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

This was not an active shooter, Turner told Fox 5 Atlanta, and it appeared to be an event where "both parties knew each other."

According to Fox 5, the identities of the people will not be released until police notify both of their families. Turner said they were "both younger people."

Walmart said in a statement to multiple outlets it was "heartbroken" by the shooting at the Hiram store.

"Our priority, right now, is the safety of our associates and customers," the statement from Walmart reads. "The store will remain closed while we work with law enforcement during their investigation.”
