2 police officers serving attempted murder warrant shot in Baltimore; gunman dead

Two law enforcement officers working with the U.S. Marshals Service were shot Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, and the gunman is dead, authorities say.

The two officers, one a detective with the city's police department and the other a detective from Baltimore County, were serving an attempted murder warrant as part of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force when the incident occurred, U.S. Marshals Service spokesman David Lutz said.

The shooting unfolded around noon in Northeast Baltimore, when the officers confronted the man, "at which time gun shots were fired," the Baltimore Police Department said in a statement.

"Our worst fears became a reality when shots were fired and the two officers were hit," Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said.

One officer was shot in the leg and the other officer was shot in the stomach.

The Baltimore Police Department and the Baltimore County Police Department each confirmed that one of their officers was taken to a shock trauma center in the city. Jennifer Peach, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Police Department, said in an email late Wednesday that one officer was released from a hospital while the other remained in serious condition.

The officers were serving the warrant to a man wanted in Pennsylvania, Peach said.

Gov. Larry Hogan said the gunman was a former state corrections official who had been under investigation. He said the task force officers were going after “a really bad guy.”

The man was shooting at the officers from inside an apartment building, neighbors told the Sun.

Hogan said state police officers were part of the joint task force between federal, state and local authorities that served the warrant. He said he directed state police to provide support and resources in the investigation.

"We ask Marylanders to join us in praying for the full and speedy recovery of the brave officers who were injured," Hogan said in a statement.
