4 taken to hospital after blaze tears through house in Gloucester

Two residents and two firefighters were injured in a fire that tore through a house in Gloucester early Monday morning.

Crews responding to a report of a fire at 33 School Street around 3 a.m. found a house engulfed in flames, according to the Gloucester Fire Department.

The two residents had to be transported to the hospital after suffering burns and smoke inhalation. The two firefighters were transported with non-life threatening injuries.

The Red Cross is assisting six family members who were displaced by the blaze. A dog was also rescued from the burning home.

“They’re a great family,” a neighborhood resident said. “They own a little sub shop around the corner...Sweetest, nicest people.”

The fire started in the back of the home and spread quickly. Photos from the scene showed heavy damage to the multi-story, wood-frame structure.

Firefighters from Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Rockport assisted Gloucester fire crews.

An investigation remains ongoing.
