3 injured after car smashes into assisted living center in Groveland

Three people were injured after a car smashed into an assisted living center in Groveland on Monday morning.

According to a spokesperson for Groveland Fire, dispatchers received a call around 10:38 a.m. for a car into a building at 1 Nichols Way.

Upon arrival, first responders found a Lexus RX350, driven by an 83-year-old man, inside the building.

Both the driver and two occupants of the home were injured. The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The driver and one occupant of the home, an 84-year-old woman, received medical care on the scene and were transported by Trinity EMS ambulance to a local hospital for additional treatment. The woman was sitting at a desk when the SUV came crashing in.

A second occupant was treated on scene for their injuries and was not transported.

“The building didn’t shake or anything but we thought something exploded,” said resident John Drinan.

He and his wife, Joanne, were home at the time of the crash.

They were both shocked to see the source of the loud explosion.

“I can’t even describe how it looked because it was just mangled, everything was mangled,” Joanne said.

The West Newbury, Georgetown, and Merrimac Fire Departments are providing mutual aid and The Fire District 5 Technical Rescue Team worked with the Groveland Building Inspector to safely remove the vehicle from the building.

“The whole hood is in the living room. The windshield is holding the building up right now,” said Groveland Fire Chief Robert Valentine.

Once the SUV was removed from the building, Groveland’s building inspector and a structural engineer, said the facility was safe to re-open,

But the two apartments directly impacted, including John and Joanne’s apartment,  were not safe, meaning John and Joanne cannot go back inside.

“I’m disappointed,” John Drinan said. “I don’t want to move. I just want to go up and take a nap.”

National Grid is on the scene to ensure the gas system has not been compromised.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
