Officers said they got a call around 2:30 a.m. for gunshots on Long Talon Way, just off Steele Creek Road in southwest Charlotte.

At the scene, police found two people who had been shot. Seventeen-year-old Murahnee Johnson died at the scene and the other person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, investigators said.

According to CMPD, officers also found a home that had been shot into while people were inside. No one was hurt in that incident.

Police said the victims were on foot when they were shot, and the shooting itself happened in the street.

Detectives say the investigation into the incident is active and ongoing. At the scene, CMPD Maj. Gene Lim spoke about what happened.

“It’s definitely disappointing that we celebrate so many good things in the closing out to 2023, that I stand in front of you talking about homicides in our great city,” he said. “I believe this is our 10th one this month.”

Lim also shared a message for neighbors in the area.

“Pay attention to your neighborhood associations, pay attention to your surroundings -- be vigilant and call us whenever you see something suspicious,” he said.

Officials have not shared what led up to the shooting. They did say some vehicles are involved in the investigation.

“Got up this morning and then turned on the news,” neighbor Jennifer Keene said. “It was just quite shocking because I’ve lived here since 2013.”

Keene said she’s on edge after learning what unfolded just one street over from where she lives.

“We’ve never had to worry about this at all. Kind of was unnerving this morning to even hear that,” she said.

Jessica Belaez said it was an unusual crime for the area.

“This is a very quiet neighborhood,” she said. “You can walk late night, and nothing worries you.”

The neighbors said they want the senseless gun violence to stop.

“Still kind of processing it. But I just wish people would just stop and think, you know, there are other ways to solve whatever problems,” Keene said.

“My God. God bless people and let them think better,” Belaez said.

Investigators have not yet found a weapon connected to the crime.
