One of the easiest ways to update your look is by experimenting with a new hairstyle but finding new and interesting hair ideas that aren’t impossible to recreate can be tough. Here are two that are perfect for every day wear, whether you have shoulder length or long layered locks.

The relaxed fishtail braid

This impressive braid is actually much simpler than it looks. There are so many amazing, easy to follow Youtube tutorials on this braid and it’s the perfect practical style for windy days or if your hair is in need of a wash.

Step one: Comb out your hair as it’s easier if your hair is completely knot free for this braid. Then, pull your hair to one side and separate it into two even sections.

Step two: Pull one piece of hair from the back section and add it to the front section. Then take one piece of hair from the front section and add it to the back section. Hold both sections as tight as you can and keep them clearly separated Repeat until a fishtail braid begins to form. This step takes practice but once you get the hang of it you will find it a lot easier.

Step three: Secure the braid with a clear elastic band and gently loosen the sections to create a fuller looking braid. Pull out a few strands to frame your face and set the style with hairspray. If needed, pin back any shorter layers that may have fallen out from the back to neaten the overall look.

Half up half down festival braid

Whether you have naturally curly or straight hair, this look is a perfect low maintenance style for a day out at a festival. The more the waves start to loosen, the more the hair looks more naturally tousled. The mini braids finish off the look in a delicate yet pretty way.

Step One: Start off by curling the ends of your hair away from your face. If you have thick hair the easiest way to do this is to section it off into layers, ensuring every piece is curled. Once all of the layers are curled, run your fingers throughout your hair to loosen the curls for a more relaxed wave.

Step Two: Then select a section of hair, about an inch back from your forehead, to braid. I chose a standard three strand plait but any braid will work. Secure this with a clear elastic. Repeat on the other side so that both plaits are symmetrical.

Step Three: Backcomb the top layer of your hair slightly to add volume and thickness. Pull both plaits towards the back of your head and secure tightly. Remove the first two elastics from the separate plaits so you are just left with the final one that ties them together.
