2 students taken into custody after weapons found separately at Riley, Jackson schools

SOUTH BEND — Two South Bend students have been taken into custody after weapons were found at Riley High School and Jackson Middle School on Tuesday in two separate incidents.

South Bend police say a firearm was found in a student’s backpack shortly after they arrived Tuesday morning at Riley. Police say school administration reached out to authorities Tuesday morning about a student possibly having a firearm.

Administrators, police, school security and a resource officer investigated and found the weapon. Police say a student was detained and taken to the Juvenile Justice Center.

Later Tuesday morning, in a separate instance, police say Jackson administrators were tipped off about a possible weapon. The school went into lockdown while a school resource officer investigated.

Police say a pellet gun was found and another student was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center.

Both cases are considered active and ongoing investigations, according to South Bend police.
