2 teens on moped injured, 1 critically, in Halawa collision

Jan. 25—Two teenage boys on a moped sustained injuries in a two-vehicle collision in the Halawa area Tuesday.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Salt Lake Boulevard at about 12:45 p.m.

Honolulu police said a blue 2011 Mazda sedan was traveling southbound on Salt Lake Boulevard and made a left turn onto Kamehameha Highway when a black moped operated by a teenager disregarded a red traffic light and broadsided the car.

The teenager and his passenger, also a teen, were thrown onto the roadway upon impact.

Police said one of the teens was taken in critical condition to a hospital and the other was taken in serious condition to a hospital. They were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The 31-year-old Mazda driver was not injured.

Neither speed, alcohol or drugs were factors, police said.
